Douglas A. Reinelt, professor of mathematics in Dedman College, joined SMU in 1983 after earning a B.S. at University of the Pacific and Ph.D. at California Institute of Technology. At SMU, he served as Mathematics Department chair from 1999 to 2005 and 2009 to 2015; president of the Faculty Senate and member of the Board of Trustees in 2015-2016; and associate provost for faculty affairs from 2016 to 2020. In addition, he served on the Faculty Council, Advisory Committee for Promotion and Tenure in Dedman College Division III, Undergraduate Council and many other University committees. In 2007, he received the Mathematics Department's Betty McKnight Speairs Endowed Teaching Excellence Award. For his work with Habitat for Humanity (HfH), he earned the SMU Faculty Volunteer of the Year Award in 2007. He also received HfH Dallas chapter's highest honor, the Mary Brock Award, in 2011 for his commitment to the mission of eradicating substandard housing in the Dallas area. Professor Reinelt's major research focus is on mathematical modeling, scientific computation and perturbation analysis of free surface fluid problems, including fluid dynamics of bubbles and thin films, coating flows, and foam rheology. He retires as professor emeritus of mathematics.
